Cheer up Buttercup!

And this most certainly should help you do that...

Andy Warhol

Did you know he illustrated for children's books before he made it big in the art world?

During the 1950’s Andy Warhol worked as a commercial artist in New York and illustrated a number of children’s stories for Nelson Doubleday Inc. - publisher of the Best in Children’s Books series.

The illustrations shown here are from The Magic Porridge Pot in Volume 21...

Warhol also provided art for several other stories in this series including Card Games Are Fun (Volume 27 - 1958), The Little Red Hen (Volume 15 - 1958) and Homemade Orchestra (Volume 7 - 1958).

"Once upon a time a cat, a mouse, a dog and a little red hen all lived together in a pretty little house..."

Cute! If you ever stumble upon a copy you'd better snatch it up as resale value continues to rise and copies are harder and harder to find.

Perfection.

The latest Audrey Tautou Chanel 5 commercial just aired before the Emmys tonight. Here's the long version, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who worked with Tautou in Amelie. If you're not sure who Jean-Pierre Jeunet is, stop everything you're doing and log onto netflix in another window and add every single one of his films to your queue. Then move them to the top. I'm serious.

The commercial was based on a scene from A Very Long Engagement and it was filmed in a railway station in Nice and on the Bosphorus in Istanbul. It also features Billie Holiday's I'm a Fool to Want You.

I couldn't have worded it better...

The September Issue

I'm a bit behind, this came out August 28th...but I had a client last week who saw it and absolutely loved it...

I Met the Walrus.

In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan snuck into John Lennon's hotel room in Toronto and convinced him to do an interview. 38 years later, Levitan, director Josh Raskin and illustrator James Braithwaite have collaborated to create an animated short film using the original interview recording as the soundtrack. A spellbinding vessel for Lennon's boundless wit and timeless message, I Met the Walrus was nominated for the 2008 Academy Award for Animated Short.

Just because...

I really liked this.

Sophie Blackall's "missed connections"

Found this blog today... missedconnectionsny.blogspot.com. Sophie's prints are also available for purchase on Etsy.

"Messages in bottles, smoke signals, letters written in the sand; the modern equivalents are the funny, sad, beautiful, hopeful, hopeless, poetic posts on Missed Connections websites. Every day hundreds of strangers reach out to other strangers on the strength of a glance, a smile or a blue hat. Their messages have the lifespan of a butterfly. I'm trying to pin a few of them down."

Fantastic Mr. Fox

Oooohh another childhood favorite has been made into a fancy movie..

From director Wes Anderson (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums) comes FANTASTIC MR. FOX, based on the book by Roald Dahl. Featuring the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman and Owen Wilson.

Oh, and I would like you to meet Foxy...

She lives in Phoenix with my folks.

Simply lovely.

It's Sunday morning and I'm sipping my coffee while catching up on emails. This little gem was in my inbox and I had to share it with everyone...such a lovely wedding video with a lovely song and lovely colors and lovely simplicity...

Zooey

How cute is Zooey Deschanel? I feel like I've seen her everywhere lately from print ads for cotton to hawking Oliver People glasses, to showing off her cute vintage style on my favorite fashion blogs and magazines. I'm not complaining. To my delight she was even in my spin and yoga class last week...

"As you walk down the street you are approached by a dog. He is on his guard trying to discern your intentions. He will follow you and interpret your gestures as friendly or aggressive. He will try to engage you in a relationship and get you to pay attention to him.
Sniff is an interactive projection in a storefront window. As the viewer walks by the projection, her movements and gestures are tracked by a computer vision system. A CG dog dynamically responds to these gestures and changes his behavior based on the state of engagement with the viewer."

Hollywood Magic

Motorcycle or work boots worn for fashion are really great only if they are nicely worn in and distressed, don't you agree? I recently found a great pair at a second hand store for a more than reasonable price, but the problem was that they were just too clean and new looking. As hard as I tried, stomping around LA making pretty hair simply wasn't doing the trick.

Here's a play by play of how to take this sort of matter into your own hands...

First thing I did was soak the boots in water, making the leather soft.

I let these puppies marinate for 3 days.

Step 2 was scrunching them up, taping them and leaving them in the sun to dry. The scrunching part is what gives the leather wrinkles and creases. I would say it took about a week for them to dry completely. I recommend having a friend help with the taping part because it's hard to hold them in place and secure the tape with only 2 hands. I managed, but I used alot of extra knee, chest and forearm action. I tried a couple different kinds of tape as well and the clear packing tape stayed on the best.

The next step is my favorite part. Scraping, scratching and scuffing. You can use good ol' fashioned sand paper but I opted for the Dremel tool. It's quicker and you can do much more with the different tips and bits.

After a bit of experimenting, I mostly went back and forth between a low grade sanding mandrel and a wool polishing tip, layering the effects. Don't forget to scuff up the sides and back of the sole as well.

I also dabbed a little oil around the bottom parts to look like a bit of water damage. Any oil will do. At some point this week I think I'll splatter just a bit of paint on them. Just a bit. You don't want it to be overkill.

The last step is one I had to get a little help with from my local shoe repair shop. With the soaking and the scrunching and the sunning the boots shrunk a smidge and there was a slight collapse in the toe box area. Not a problem. For around 10 to 15 dollars and about a week's worth of patience you can have your boots stretched back out.

Enjoy and good luck...

The newest addition.

I had to leave town last week to meet this little guy...
