Flat Stanley

My niece Rylei is in kindergarten and in her class they read a book called "Flat Stanley." For spring break their homework was to take pictures with Stanley on vacation...if they didn't go out of town during their break from school they had to mail Stanley to a friend or family member who lives in another city to take pictures of Stanley there. Guess what?? Stanley has been in Hollywood with me for the last week or so. He's had quite a colorful visit and met some interesting characters...

First thing he did was pamper himself with a manicure, pedicure and lamination...

Then he went shopping and tried some new looks...

He tried the local cuisine...

and went on a tour of the city...

He met some new friends...

and saw a show...

He kicked some butt...

and saw some stars...

He hiked up a hill to take in the view...

He met Shia LaBouf from the movie Transformers...

and Miranda Cosgrove from the tv show iCarly...

He did some dancing...

and some camping...

He hung out with the locals...

Then he saw the most beautiful girl he had ever seen before...

Flat Mandy was her name!

And the rest is history...

THE END!

Bijuled

My girl Jules Kim has an AMAZING jewelry line that's getting a lot of attention these days. In fact it was featured front and center on this month's issue of BlackBook! She just put out this little promo video for her 2009 collection and I really like it...
Shadow puppets!!!! Why has no one else thought of this?

Kid Cudi

I'm kinda obsessed with this one right now.
I can watch the music video over and over...

I especially love that it was all shot in my neighborhood!

Ipod lifers

There are a few songs that have honorary VIP placement on my ipod, meaning they never ever get traded out. This is definitely one of those jams. The video is whatevs...but the song. THE SONG!!

I'm trying to put together a little acoustic remake of this with the help of my guitar coach. It's really difficult because of the timing and the chords...but how dope would that be??

Crew.

I have my fingers crossed..

I loved this book so much when I was little so I really hope they did a good job with the movie. Spike Jonze is directing and Catherine Keener, Forest Whitaker, James Gandolfini are starring. I like what I'm hearing so far...

Little know fact...the original concept for the book featured horses instead of monsters. The author, Maurice Sendak, said he switched when he discovered that he could not draw horses. Monsters are way more fun anyway.

Please and thank you.

It's quite refreshing to see graffiti artists practicing such good manners!
How cute is this?

I should add that these are actually really large since you can't really tell from the picture. They're in Echo Park on Glendale Blvd, just south of the 2.

LACMA lights

I've driven by the permanent lightpost installation outside of LACMA on Wilshire plenty of times and never really knew what it was about. Mystery Solved! I finally went to see the Vanity Fair portraits exhibit, and found out a bit more about the lights outside. 202 antique cast-iron street lights from various cities in and around the Los Angeles area. The street lights are functional, turn on in the evening (I recommend seeing them lit), and are powered by solar panels on the roof of the BP Grand Entrance. The artist's name is Chris Burden. Burden's reputation as a performance artist started to grow in the early 1970s after he made a series of controversial performances in which the idea of personal danger as artistic expression was central. His most well-known act from that time is perhaps the 1971 performance piece Shoot, in which he was shot in his left arm by an assistant from a distance of about five meters. Burden was taken to a psychiatrist after this piece.
Another of Burden’s most famous, Trans-Fixed took place in 1974 at Speedway Avenue in Venice, California. For this performance, Burden lay face up on a Volkswagen Beetle and had nails hammered into both of his hands, as if he was being crucified on the car. The car was pushed out of the garage and the engine revved for two minutes before being pushed back into the garage.

Ummmm...OK.
I think I understand the lightposts more.

What I really wanted to photograph was the exhibit inside. Well...not so much the exhibits I guess but the people looking at them. Unfortunately there's a no camera rule and being the pansy ass that I am, everytime I thought it was prime opportunity to take a good shot of an unsuspecting soul I chickened out. I took one picture. And here it is...my evidence of law breakage....

Since I didn't get any bootleg shots inside, I looked online and found some of my favorites from the collection to show you.

Once more with feeling

This would be even better if his parents had no idea what he was up to in his room.

Gee...do you think he might be...?

Soul Train

Happy Saturday!

See...

You don't need fancy tools to make something spectacular.

Just sayin'

Clearly he didn't get my letter.
