This is a clip from one of the earliest films made, an 1895-1897 short of dancing sisters Annabelle and Crissie Sheridan performing 'the serpentine dance' in specially designed costumes with large tapered pleats in them only covering the back and arms.. It's like watching a whirling flower, or a jellyfish, isn't it? And also so interesting to see how the pioneers of film were exploring the possibilities of this new medium.
The stills are equally as mesmerizing...
This film of dancer Loie Fuller performing the serpentine dance was made by the Lumiere Brothers in 1896. It was shot and hand-colored frame by frame...
The epitome of timeless beauty.
